One
of the Four Guardian Kings of Japanese Buddhism, Bishamonten is
the protector of the North, considered the most dangerous direction.
With a trident in his right hand and a stupa in his left, he tramples
an evil spirit underfoot, his fierce countenance adding to his
commanding presence. This strong, dynamic figure is characteristic
of the Muromachi period (1333-1573), a time dominated by the military
class.
