This
typical Korean genre painting focuses attention on a common scene
of country life. A clerk is shown writing down the case described
by the two villagers at bottom left. The appearance of the magistrate
on a sedan chair shaded by a parasol suggests that somewhat arbitrary
judgment will be passed once he has read the clerks summary.
This was probably in a series of similar scenes from a folding
screen. A second painting in the series, showing a picnic,
is also in the collection.
