Two Arhats with Hvashang
Tibet, late 1700s
color, gold on cloth, 23 1/2 x 16 inches (59.7 x 40.7 cm)

Gift of May Wilfley in memory of her parents, A. R. Wilfley and Addie M. Wilfley

This painting is one of two known survivors from a set of seven banner paintings that represent Buddha encircled by the Great Arhats (Buddhist saints). It shows the Arhats Kanakavatsa and Chudapanthaka seated on thrones and Hvashang, the large-bellied figure, surrounded by playing children. Guardians of the South and East are in the lower corners; in the upper corners are the protector goddess Sitatapatra and the savior goddess Green Tara.
